Best Indoor Activities in the City

When the heat hits, there’s only one place to head: indoors!

It’s summertime in the city and you know what that means: blazing hot sidewalks, exhaust fumes, and that all too familiar scent of hot garbage. Sometimes, you need to get away from those UV rays and stay inside. Here are some of the best indoor activities in the city this summer.

For the Artsy One:

Watch a movie! We know what you’re thinking, “but I can watch a movie anywhere, what’s so special about it in New York?” Well, New York City has a ton of Indie movie theatres featuring the old, the new, and the artistic. Head downtown to Landmark Sunshine Cinema for a taste of vintage movie theatre snacks and charming independent films. Staying further uptown? No problem. Check out Film Society Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side for a similar feel. Best of all, they have a $25 dinner & indie film combo featuring food and wine to complement your movie! That’s what we call fine dining.

For the athlete:

Go rock climbing! Brooklyn Boulders has the city’s largest climbing gym with over 18,000 square feet of space. New to the sport? They’ve got you covered with climbing lessons for all skill levels. If rock climbing isn’t really your thing, why not try one of their yoga or pilates classes? There’s never a shortage of things to do if you look hard enough, so change into your athletic wear, put your hair up, and head to Gowanus!

For the thespian:

See a performance! If Hamilton tickets aren’t quite in your budget, take a look at some off-Broadway shows to see what is. From comedy to dance to kid-friendly, you’re bound to find a show that’s perfect for you. For live music and beautiful aerial displays, Fuerza Bruta is a must see! Not only is this a 360º performance, you’re actually on stage with the performers!

For the budding curator:

Museums! Lucky for you, New York has a vast collection of museums that feature photography, fossils, and everything in between. If you’re looking to learn more about the history of science and how it shapes our natural world, head to the Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side. If you’re feeling a little adventurous and are eager to learn more about your own body, be sure to stop the Museum of Sex in NoMad. This summer, the Met is hosting Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Totally worth checking out.

For the music lover:

Head to a concert! With stages upon stages in the city, you’re sure to find something to your liking. Jazz, rock, indie, rap, you name it, we’ve got it. From local artists to big name celebrities, New York doesn’t go a single night without a musical performance. If you’re looking for a fun general admission experience, Webster Hall (located in the East Village) has 5 rooms within the whole venue, so there’s never a dull moment.

For the one who loves to laugh:

Visit a comedy club! If stand-up, improv, and skits are your thing, be sure to stop in for one of New York’s many comedy shows! Home to SNL and 30 Rock, the city is not one to disappoint. For an intimate setting with lots of audience interaction, visit one of the two Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) theaters located in Chelsea and the East Village. You’ll be impressed with they can do with just one line. If you’re looking to wine and dine along with your laughs, check out The Stand in Gramercy for exactly that!

For the escapist:

Have you heard of Escape the Room? Grab some friends, coworkers, or work alongside strangers in this exciting interactive game! What looks like an ordinary room is actually filled with clues. You have 60 minutes to escape, so work quickly! In New York, you have 5 rooms to choose from: the office, the rec room, the agency, the home, and the theater. If you’ve got an hour to kill and you’re in the mood for adventure, try your luck at escaping the room!
