There’s always a baking fad sweeping through the city, from cronuts to overzealous milkshakes. But the chocolate chip cookie is as classic as a little black dress.
Whether you like your cookie crunchy or soft, dunked in milk or with a mug of coffee, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our list of the four best chocolate chip cookies in New York City. Trust us, we’re done our sweets research.
Where we went: By Chloe
Why we love it: If you’re looking for the perfect throne to capture your next instagram-worthy photo, may we suggest the swinging chair located inside the West Village hotspot By Chloe. These vegan treats will enable you to press on with that four letter word we never mumble (diet) or save some space to indulge later on. But don’t let this fool you – these desserts may be beach-bod friendly, but that doesn’t make them any less sweet. You might never know they were vegan, but these massive cookies are delightful and crunchy. With espresso flavor peppered into the batter, and a generous number of chocolate chunks, this cookie feels guilty but doesn’t have to be. Take a bite out of By Chloe’s chocolate chip cookie and see for yourself.
If you like your cookies gooey with a side of sticky chocolate fingers, they’ll heat them up for you.
Where we went: Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man
Why we love it: Max Brenner may be famous for its chocolate pizza, but don’t let that distract you from its masterful chocolate chip cookies. These are pillowy soft with layer upon layer of creamy milk chocolate. There’s nothing New Yorkers love more than a pro tip, so here’s one: skip the line and jump in the express lane to pick up one of these bad boys, then proceed to find a spot where you can devour your cookie undisturbed. We’re still not quite sure who this bald Max Brenner is, but one thing is clear: he sure knows chocolate.
Where we went: Jacques Torres
Why we love it: If you’re looking for a gourmet chocolate fix, search no further and head straight to Jacques Torres. This chocolate chip cookie constantly tops the lists for New York’s finest, and we certainly don’t disagree. There are two unique factors to their chocolate chip cookie. The first is the large grains of sea salt embedded into the batter, and the second is the large disks of bittersweet chocolate. We did some further digging and found out these disks are made by Valrhona. We especially love this because we use Valrhona chocolate in our baking kits too — it’s simply divine. Added bonus: if you like your cookies gooey with a side of sticky chocolate fingers, they’ll heat them up for you.
Where we went: Dominique Ansel
Why we love it: Typically you’d have to wake up at 5am to make it in time for a cronut in the never-ending line at this popular pastry haven. But it turns out that the cookies are just as good as the rest of the confections. Buttery and soft, this cookie melts in your mouth. Lose yourself in all the nooks and crannies of the dough, and the mammoth chunks of chocolatey goodness. Pro tip: There’s a little garden behind the bakery that’s perfect to soak up some of that New York sunshine while sipping on a big cup of coffee.
